Life & work
Early work and Otaghkar
Ashgvari studied music at Tehran University, but left without completing a degree.9 He began singing Deep Purple songs at eighteen. After studying classical music, guitar and piano and working on a succession of rock projects, he turned to jazz.10
He made and released Hejdah in Tehran in 2009.11 In 2012, he sang on Sahel-e Tehran with the jazz group Naima. He also worked as the art director of Kamakan’s first album.124
In 2013, he founded Otaghkar, a platform that organized events, workshops and music releases. Through it he worked with other independent musicians: more than a hundred people took part in its workshops, and in 2017 it organized the Bazshenid festival in Tehran, with 26 musicians performing.8
Far and To Trucks
In 2016, Ashgvari and Amir Saremi released Far through Noufe. Besides Ashgvari’s voice and Saremi’s guitar, the album used electric piano, clarinet, violin and viola, with string arrangements by Christophe Rezaei.131415
For his next solo album, To Trucks, Ashgvari collected sounds while travelling around Iran, often hitchhiking. He dedicated it to the truck drivers he met on those journeys.10 He cut, distorted and re-recorded the material for one side of the album; on the other, he reworked older poems and songs, changing words and combining lines. He thought of the two sides as journeys through geography and time.6 He handled the recording and production himself, using existing songs and poetry rather than writing new songs for the album.10
Then Go
Ashgvari and Saremi returned to their duo on Then Go, released in 2019.147 This time they recorded only voice and guitar together at Saba Studio. Ashgvari said its storytelling poems could draw listeners into the songs, while the arrangements had fewer changes than on Far. Kaveh Abedin recorded, mixed and mastered the album.7 Ashgvari and Saremi produced it themselves.7
In Rage We Dance
In July 2025, Ashgvari released In Rage We Dance, writing, playing and producing all its tracks.2 He described drawing on the darbuka, Kurdish singers, rhythms inspired by Dabke and the voice and groove of Cheikha Rimitti. Unable to travel to the places he wanted to record, as he had for To Trucks, he used his laptop to listen to and combine these sounds.16 He wanted listeners dancing in Tehran to feel solidarity with people across the region.16

As an electronic musician, Makan Ashgvari likes to weave his surroundings into his creative work, like the sound of trucks lumbering on the roads of Tehran where he lives. As an artiste, Makan refuses to be compartmentalised, and to help more such independence in the creation of arts, he founded Otaghkar in Tehran as a platform for independent music in 2013.
Some people can be mad at me because I have distorted and destroyed some Iranian literature by changing the words, changing the orders of the lines of the poems and also mixing them together. So that’s not something you do to the classical Iranian literature as that’s the red line. The sounds I recorded while travelling, I distorted them, cut them, re-recorded them and transformed them. The sounds that I recorded while travelling are called Side A and I call the poems and songs that I borrowed from classical literature and transformed, Side B. So Side A is a geographic journey and Side B is a journey in time and I looked at my album as a tape, like you can play the other side. I hitchhiked a lot in Iran and while travelling I was seeing so many trucks on the road and even when I was back in Tehran — I would say a city so similar to Calcutta — I could also see trucks on the streets there, which was very odd. I thought that these trucks belong to the roads and not the city. The truck drivers treat the truck as a live person — for example, if you offer biscuits to a live person, they will say that the truck will be upset as the truck is like the host.

After my album “To Trucks”, which was a sound journey through Iran, I tried to draw from the sounds of a vast land of oppressed people. The Darbuka, the voices of Kurdish singers, rhythms inspired by Dabke, and the powerful voice and groove of Cheikha Rimitti. Although I couldn’t travel and record in the lands that had my heart (as I did with To Trucks), my laptop became a way to travel, to listen, and to join these sounds, both in my head and in my electronic music.
My dream with this album is that one night, at a small party in Tehran, someone dancing to my music closes their eyes and feels the arms of their siblings in Herat and Beirut, Gaza and Damascus, Sulaymaniyah and Cairo resting on their shoulders, in solidarity. May this music tell the people who dance to it, the things I can’t say by words.

Kamakan (کماکان) is an Iranian fusion group formed in 2012 by Mahdi Saki — a theatre-trained actor, singer, and composer born in 1974 in Khuzestan, in Iran's south. Kamakan's music sets contemporary arrangements against the folk traditions of southern Iran, drawing its lyrics from the poetry of Rumi (Mowlana) alongside the verses of poet Ebrahim Monsefi.
